We’re Having an Essay Contest!
We are having an essay contest for students attending Greene County Schools in honor of one of its founding members Dick Johnson who passed away recently. Dick was devoted to the club and was actively involved in educating the public about importance of the honeybee. The topic of the essay this year will be “The importance of the honey bee to agriculture and the environment”. The essay must be no longer than 500 words. The winning contestant will receive: One 3- pound package of honeybees with mated queen, a complete beginner’s kit (both donated by Hudson Valley Bee Supply, Kingston NY) a one year family membership to the Catskill Mountain Beekeepers Club and a year’s subscription to Bee Culture magazine. The winner will also be assigned a mentor to assist with the first year of this beekeeping project.
The deadline for applications is April 1, 2019. Submit essays by email to: firstname.lastname@example.org. Along with the essay applicants must include: school attended, grade, age, address and phone number.
Our club began in 1996 with a dedicated and experienced handful of people. We now have over 130 member families who raise bees, teach others about beekeeping, and sell their honey products. We contribute our time and information to the Catskill communities by participating in numerous events in Greene County. In addition to our hive products, our exhibition booths contain literature, posters, equipment, and an observation hive.
The purpose and objectives of our club are:
• Serve as a resource to local beekeepers.
• Educate the community about the joys, skills and fruits of beekeeping.
• Provide an outlet for the membership to sell member-produced honey and other hive products.
• Foster interactions with the agricultural community and other beekeeping organizations.
• Recruit new members.
